I've been a member of my local Rotary club for two years. Rotary International is a service organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs. My club focuses specifically on awards and volunteer work with local schools and libraries and the international focus is on buying wheelchairs for Third World villages, and coordinating international youth/adult exchange programs. Globally, Rotarians are working toward complete eradication of polio by 2005. Since launching the Polio Plus program in 1985, Rotary has worked together with partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world, to achieve a 99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide.
