I have been
so out of touch on the music scene lately (like I'm really that *in* touch,
but whatever...) so I decided to do something different this month. Filling
up the categories here takes several CDs and a ton of $$ if you buy them
all at once. So I just went nuts on the used CD's. Worked great. I picked
up this entire month's selecetions for under $100! And it's supposed to
serve as a reminder to you that there is some seriously quality music beyond
the "On Sale This Week" rack. (excluding, of course, the $1.99
bins at truckstops on the I-10...)
Standard
disclaimer on my musical tastes:
I thrive on music that transcends the mainstream. There are some great
radio bands that pepper the overall music portfolio, but the truly great
music is still the stuff you have to search for or just happen upon. Maybe
the search is what makes it so interesting, but whatever - here are some
hard-to-discover great picks along with the best of the corporate sell-outs
(ha ha).
I've tried
to categorize these selections by mood/ambiance and ultimate moto experience.
Bear in mind, my musical tastes are quite eclectic and you should sample
my recommendations before forking over hard-earned cash on one of these
diverse, albeit musically advanced experiences.
For the
Intense Moto:

CRAZY
TOWN
The Gift of Game
| You
probably know the song "Butterfly", you know "Come,
Come, m'lady..." sweet song right? Pretty good indicator of the
rest of the CD. Got the gnarly voice backed up by the 'alternative
pop' white-rappin' vocals with a jamming (most of the time) sound.
I don't know, it's like Beastie Boys meets Rage meets God Lives Underwater.
Overall it's hard and really playful. If you're still not sold, you'll
buy it as soon as you see the cover. The cutest punk rock devil girl
ever; horns, halo, tattoos, lollipop.

FUDGE
TUNNEL
The Complicated Futility of Ignorance
| Yeah,
how cool is that title. This is one of my oldest favorite bands, if
you like deep loowww base, this band is for you. I guess it's grungy,
deep base, low gutteral voice and the low-quality recording (albeit
on CD) quality that makes you reminise about the good ole mosh pit
days. I haven't been keeping up with this band and they have certianly
moved on from college-town-basement-party level to small bigger-city
club level, anyone from Portland been to Satyricon? They'd fit right
in! They seem alot more 'musical' in a way that makes them seem tighter
as opposed to sell-outs. Don't worry they still have the grunge and
the hard driving 'I'm gonna moto all over your azz' attitude, this
will definitely get you fully riled up for the start line.

(hed)pe
(hed)pe
| So,
I bought this CD mainly because I used to see (hed)pe stickers all
over Long Beach. Figured the band had to be cool and that I had to
check them out, I think I eventually heard a song somewhere but basically
bought this CD blind. Oh yeah, this CD is bound to create a moshpit
at the startgate. Really gets the uh, testosterone raging in the first
couple tracks with the RAW sort of Orange 9mm sound. They keep it
up with mega low base rifs and throw in some high-energy mosh-pit
worthy energy before settling into a mellower funky hip-hopish (with
an edge) sound with a lot of hard-core creativity to keep it fun.
What is it with Orange 9mm, but you will find a bit of them in this
stuff too. (and that's always good...)

For the
Loooooong Drive to a Dez Race:
|
LIT
Tripping the Light Fantastic
| God
I hate this band! I swear, the only reason I'm including them is because
I wasted $8.99 on this CD so I feel I have to get my money's worth
by including them. But this band IS the answer to 2000's version of
glam rock. These guys are trying to hang in the moto scene with their
spikey hair and tattoos but seriously, this is just "hard core"
pop, ARGH!! If Poison ever does a reunion, this monotonous sorority-girl-who-thinks-she-has-an-edge
pop-star-wanna-be groupie-group would be the prefect opener. Oh spare
me! Anyway, I had to include this here because if you happen to be
at odds over the music selection with your driving-to-the-desert companion,
this is the sort of mindless pop that sounds 'hard' enough that if
you turn the volume down and talk over it, might just be tolerable
to many different musical tastes. Sort of like muzak...

TOOL
Lateralus
| OK,
yeah, like luv (not) the 6-page transparent insert that gives you
zero info... But anyway... I've been losing my adoration for Tool
over the years as they become more melodic, bordering metal-balladesque.
But still, I had to put Lateralus in this category because hell, who
doesn't love Tool!?!? (Ok, who would also be en route to a dirt ride
or race...) I mean this is the perfect keep-everyone-in-the-truck-happy
CD. Maynard is still way cool and his completely recognizable voice
will always take you back to the beginning when Tool was just totally
awesome. This CD is definitely chock full of superb tracks, it's just
that if you're picky like me, you'll find yourself fast-forwarding
through all of the boring melodic seeminly way-to-long intros and
'ballads' to find them. According to my friend Darren, everything
I've just written is blasphemy, they are the wickedest band ever...
Take HIS word for it, what do I care!?!?

For the
Post-Race Hot Tub with your Hottie:
|
SADE
Lover's Rock
| No matter
how old the CD, Sade will always work for this situation. The soft,
sultry way she whispers low-pitched, long-held syllables to the simple
yet perfectly mood-fitting sounds just makes you melt. (if the 110
degree water hasn't yet, or your hottie...)
|
|
FRANK
BLACK
Frank Black
| I can't
believe this guy is from the phenomenal band the Pixies! I mean, that
super cool Pixie's sound still comes through but this is basically
crap. Maybe a fanatacism for aliens will tweak your musical palate.
put it in this section in case you happen to have some total 80-lovin'
can't-adapt-to-the-newmillenium 'hottie' in your hot tub. If you turn
it low enough you might just be able to tolerate it too, sort of like
muzak...
|
|
Olive
Extra Virgin
| Olive
is the modern day Sade. Same sultry sound justf this CD, when I'm
in 'that' mood. It's sultry with an upbeat sort of twinge. A good-mood
intimacy.

Music
to amp you up for a night out at the disco:
|
SCOTT
HENRY
UL1055-2
| aka:
the sound of the nations capitol. I know what you're thinking, but
although it *was* produced in NY, it was already out in 2000... Anyway,
this is a compliation of super cool techno tracks. Not mind-numbing,
but definitely on club level. And they all sound really different
which is cool for keeping you on edge and amping you up! You'll be
waving your arms around in no time.
|
|
DIGITAL
EMPIRE
Techno Anthems
| Another
compliation of club-worthy techno tracks. Hm, Kinda worrisome, this
one's produce in MN by K-Tel - famous for cheesy disco compliations?
The first track is a low-key version of Inner City's "Big Fun"
this track will take you back to some good times! This CD has a really
varied collection of sounds, but it really comes off as kind of old
school. I think this could seriously work if you are getting ready
to go out and have the drinks already poured and a group with you
waiting for the taxi (designated driver). Works as background music
(gets into some of the mind-numbing stuff) and if you listen too closely,
you'll be wondering when "tour de france" is going to play...
|
|
SASH
It's My Life
| I had
another of their CDs on here a while ago that seemed a little mellow/boring
to me. But I like this music more and more the more I listen. It's
very upbeat and happy which give character to the ocassional quasi-repetetiveness.
It's definitely the club sound but I'd say more upbeat and is definitely
good to get you all pumped up to hit the disco!

Miscellaneous
Really Cool Ear Candy
|
CHEF
AID
The South Park Album
| OK,
this one is a MUST! It's pure comedy, well, and some just cool stuff.
Like Primus headlining the South Park theme song? Here's your challenge:
try to listen to 'Come Sail Away' sung by Cartman without totally
cracking up - impossible! Other favorites include Chef's 'Chocolate
Salty Balls', Ned Gerbansky's 'Feel Like Makin' Love' and 'Will They
Die For You' performed by Mase, Puffy, Lil' Kim & System of a
Down. A must-add to any colletion.br>
|
|
DARUDE
Before the Storm
| OK,
I'm still not sure about the actual cool rating on this one. It's
electronica/techno - lyricless. Can get a little monotonous at times,
but he really breaks it up. Just when you start drifting into that
'Night at The Roxybury' headbounce, he switches tempo and intensity
on you. This is great music for background at some intense activity
like a party or running or a trippy store or definitely for dancing,
but don't put it in if you want to just listen and sink in.
